Although you don't really need ctap, it's a really useful technique to know, you can use it to make a lot of jumps easier (wallshots, syncs, ss).
If you can do a 620-640 vertical ctap pretty consistently then you can probably stop practicing just ctap and try use it as you jump, shouldn't take that long for you to be able to use it for every jump. You definitely don't need to have it perfect (or even know it at all) before you start trying jump maps.
But back on topic there's like 4 maps that have unskippable ctaps that I can think of (legion, lion, squared bonus, duey?) so it's not really needed, but it still good to know how to do it.
You can shoot the wall on the 640 ctap on legion, and telesync the ctap on lion. I think duey and flow might have ctaps you can't skip?
