Yes it is, and not it isn't.
At least it shouldn't be, cause that wouldn't make any sense. You don't need to spam crouch to get that trick, pressing it at the right time is just fine.

Spamming crouch makes it a lot more difficult, doing it at the right moment is easier and more consistent, especially since number of crouch/uncrouches you can do per jump (i.e time spent in the air) is limited
