Maps of the Month

Hey everyone!

Recently on stream, I was proposed the idea of starting a series along the lines of "Map(s) of the Month" for tf2rjweekly. In this series, I would be making a teaser video for each map (put into one video), accompanied by a map pack with all showcased maps. This series wouldn't be limited to being a monthly format, as I'm not entirely sure that our community of mappers is consistently prolific enough to allow for a set monthly maps. Issues/questions like these are part of why I made this thread. I'd like to gauge what you guys think about the prospect of it, how it could influence the community, and tell me if it's something that you guys would like to see.

Another more long term addition to this could be making a video for a "map of the year," which could either be added onto a "maps of the month" series or be standalone.

On top of this, another thing that was suggested during the original discussion was to allow non-rjweekly editors to get their own showcases of maps on the channel, which I think is a really good idea. My current idea is that if it's of at least passable quality (ex: the showcase for jump_ouryoku), then putting it on the channel is fine. It could help bring up new editors and allow for greater community engagement, so I like the idea.

If you guys like these ideas, or would like to contribute to them, please make a post in this thread!

I like this. Supporting the small jumper is good and a break from the constant flow of professional edits showing the top jumpers. This could also lead to small jump movies being hosted. Doing things like this opens up the channel to the general community.

I think one month is not enough to make a high quality map and there are not enough people making maps to really pick the best out of them. So instead it should probably be a showcase type of thing for whenever there are enough new maps made (maybe a good compromise would be "reviewing" new maps as they get added to tempus because they usually get added in chunks). Map of the year sounds cool, hopefully rjweekly would live long enough to feature more than one map of the year. Also letting non-rjweekly people make showcases is a good thing because it might discover some new talents and unite the community since its already small enough as it is.

I like the idea of allowing non-RJweekly editors to submit showcases or edits for the channel, as a separate series or something. It's difficult to get exposure with TF2 edits, especially RJ edits where the only place to post them is here really. The TF2RJweekly channel gets a bunch of consistent viewers however, so it'd be cool to try and expand it as a platform as long as the edits were of passable quality like you say.

If that doesn't turn out to be favourable, having a reliable way to apply to edit for the channel might work better. I don't know of any ways past being in the discord and asking someone and the thread from 2017 that didn't get much use.

As for the Map of the Month idea, I agree with Boshy that one month isn't a realistic time frame to make a good map. I feel like it would result in submissions being filled with copy pasted prefab jumps. I also agree with his idea of just showcasing/reviewing maps as they're added to Tempus.

Kinda garbo ideas crossed out dont even bother reading it

What is the purpose of the whole "maps of the month" idea? To exposure maps, tempus does that already. Every time a new map is added it is usually played pretty soon after being added, and people decide if they like that map or if its garbo.

I also really liked how the quality of edits has skyrocketed after nick became the new owner of rjweekly. While I don't know of every editor in the jumping community (I hope you meant that, not just random ass editors of TF2 uploading showcases), I feel like there are only a few ones who meet the rjweekly level of editing (apologies if that's not the case). Start up editors can, and will be noticed anyway, it's not like they can not join the discord and show their own edits there or even apply to become an editor of the channel.

In conclusion: I don't think this is a great idea, the job of exposing maps is done already and I'm afraid that the overall quality of edits might get worse if new editors are allowed to upload just for the sake of exposure (Riapah, let's learn from history guys)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

- Not everyone plays on Tempus
- It's always nice to have your map featured on a relatively big channel
- There will be some quality control, but nowhere near as high as Nick's edits
- Editors will get a bigger boost from TF2RJWeekly rather than just a handful of people on a discord
- Exposure is great for people, makes them want to keep pursuing editing (Let's learn from history guys and take a look at myself)
- If editing standards are so high, no one will bother to learn editing since they'll think there's no way their going to get that good
- New editors means new editing styles, there's way too many just copying Toss/Nick's edits

In conclusion: Let's get some new guys on the channel

Why would I need a newsletter when I'm 12 hours a day on jump.tf
